Valentine Day Mix

DJ 9-Volt - Volume 41 - Valentine's Day Mix

Holidays are a big deal for my family. As is the case with many families, we are all so busy and spread out geographically that it’s tough to get everyone together in one place. I especially love spending time with my nieces and nephews, despite the fact that each year they get bigger and bigger making me feel older and older. And nothing makes me feel older than listening to their music with them. Full disclosure – I’ve started spending more time tuned into the “Oldies” stations because, well, they’re starting to play more and more of the music I grew up with.

This year was no different. I sat down with my niece and let her choose the music for a while. Since I’d vetoed Bieber and One Direction before we even started (much to her chagrin), she played Jason Derulo’s “Marry Me,” and quickly followed it up with one of my personal favorites, Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way You Are.”

In keeping with the theme of love songs, I played Brian Mcknight’s “One Last Cry,” and was appalled when she did not know it. I followed it up with Vanessa Williams’ “Save the Best for Last.” Sadly, she’d never heard that song either.

From the sad melodies of the lover’s lament songs to the suggestive lyrics of the smooth seduction songs, there’s nothing that showcases the many complexities of love quite like old-school R&B. This is the stuff middle and high school dances were made of.

When I sat down to record this mix, I just had to play out these songs in their entirety, because I felt that if I cut out the bridge, I’d often be cutting out the best (not to mention the most emotional) parts of the songs. Also, I wanted to record something that would remind my older listeners of the mixtapes we used to put together using a cassette and the radio to give to that special someone. Regardless of whether you know all of the songs or none of them, I hope everyone enjoys listening to this mix. One suggestion if I may – the mix is a lot better when you share it with someone you love. ;-)

Fan Mail from Tina & Jason’s Florentine Gardens Wedding!

This is another oldie but goodie!  Tina is a friend of ours from college and asked Mike & I (Taiga) to spin her Florentine Gardens wedding when we were first flirting with this wedding DJing thing.  We’ve come a long way and so have the Coadys with a little one running around now.

Thank you Tina & Jason for your kind words and for believing in us!

DJ 9-Volt Multi-tasking at Susan & Gary’s Battery Gardens Wedding Celebration in NYC!

Battery Gardens Wedding!

Gary & Susan - Battery Gardens Wedding

We here at The Remixologists pride ourselves on being able to multitask. We like to believe that we can do anything for any couple that calls on us. We’ve been DJ’s, emcees, bakers, photographers, audio technicians, video specialists…we even once had a DJ who decided he wanted to be both the DJ and the groom (*ahem* Taiga). Well, I (9-Volt) decided to add to that list by attempting the Best Man/DJ combo/Emcee for my college roommate, Gary’s, Battery Gardens Wedding.  Fortunately, rather than leave me to attempt this insanity, DJ Mike was able to come up and handle the DJ/Emcee responsibilities so that I could focus on being the best Best Man I could be (and honestly, we’re all glad he did).

Susan and Gary were married on August 11th at the Battery Gardens in New York City. Though the dancing was cut a bit short, DJ Mike was able to rock the crowd with a mix of Motown and Top 40. In fact, despite only being able to spin for about 40 minutes, DJ Mike kept everyone on the floor the entire time, so 40 minutes felt like 2 hours.

I’ve decided to dedicate Volume 40 of the DJ 9-Volt collection to Susan and Gary. I recorded it in the studio as though it was me who spun the wedding. The first few tracks were the entrance songs for the Bridal Party and the final song was the couple’s first dance. The mix’s title, “Music, Joy, and Love” is a nod to the toast I delivered in their honor.  Check out the mix and more pictures from the wedding below!

Congratulations, Susan and Gary. Thank you for letting me be a part of your special day.. Go Quakers!

MULTICULTURAL INDIAN WEDDING DANCE PARTY!

Rohit and Pia's multicultural indian wedding dance party

We first posted about Rohit & Pia’s awesome multicultural Indian wedding awhile back with a bunch of pictures (see here).  Now we have a short old-school feeling wedding highlight video courtesy of James Sengul.  Check out the fabulous details of the wedding and the raucous dancing that went on! We played everything from Stevie Wonder, Notorious BIG, Rihanna, Michael Jackson to Bhangra & Bollywood hits mixed in for a great dance party by all.  Everybody looked pretty sweaty by the time the evening was done, but they all left with smiles on their faces!

And I wish I could end every night with a visit to the elaborate dessert table & ice cream sandwich cart! :)

AAJA trivia bowl at ABC TV1 Studios

This is an oldie but goodie!  I (Taiga) was invited to spin for the AAJA’s (Asian American Journalists Association) inaugural Trivia Bowl at the ABC TV1 Studio in NYC where they currently film The Chew.  You can check out pictures and more tidbits from the event here.  Another fun fact… the space the Trivia Bowl was in used to be the set where they filmed the original “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” with good old Regis Philbin.  Anyways, thank you for your kind words AAJA!

Thank you from AAJA trivia bowl at ABC TV1 Studios

Dear Simon,

Thank you for your work and superior services as our deejay at AAJA-NY’s inaugural Trivia Bowl Fundraiser held on May 18, 2012 at ABC’s TV1 studio in New York which was hosted by ABC News’ Juju Chang and Fox 5′s Ti-Hua Chang.

Your timing and improvising with the program with impeccable and really made all the difference in our interactive scholarship fundraiser attended by more than 150 media, community, and business leaders.

Event proceeds go toward supporting students who pursue the journalism profession; providing increased training to AAPI journalists so they can be effective leaders for positive change in the industry with a commitment to diversity in the newsroom, and forging stronger ties within the AAPI communities.

AAJA New York is the organization’s largest chapter and has approximately 300 members.

Thank you again on behalf of AAJA-NY and we hope to work with you again in the future.

Sincerely,

Leezel Tanglao
