A Holiday Party Mix Without The Holiday Music!

No Comments Mixes

What’s a holiday season without a parting gift? Here’s a mix I put together (Top 40/Hip Hop/Electro) for my friend’s holiday party to be played after a dozen or so Christmas tunes and drinks. It’s a good workout mix too for the folks with new years resolutions coming up. More mixes coming in the new year! Enjoy and stayed tuned!

HAPPY NEW YEAR from The Remixologists!

Summertime Mix!

1 Comment Mixes

After spinning an awesome barn wedding in Maine over this past 4th of July weekend (congrats Ed & Ruth!), I relaxed on that Monday with a few El Presidentes (brought back memories of my honeymoon in the DR)!  While some folks fired up their grills for BBQing, I fired up the turntables and cooked up a mix that goes hand in hand with chilling by the waters.  If you’re a lover of different eras and genres of music, you’ll enjoy this summer megamix with everything from the 60s to current summer heaters.  Enjoy!

Doesn’t the cover make you want to go on vacation? :)

HAPPY SUMMER!

Sachin + Babi Cocktail Party and Trunk Show @ Misha Nicole NYC

No Comments Events, Mixes

Misha Nicole is a retail concept store (clothes + culture + art) that recently opened in NOHO and they asked us to DJ their Sachin + Babi trunk show/cocktail party.  Those in attendance included Indian supermodel Nina Manuel, actress/personality Neelu Sodhi (both pictured above left), and fashion photographer Shawn Punch.  With the weather being so nice, I threw on some smooth goodness while folks sipped on sparkling wine and browsed the impressive storefront.

Using my new toy (Vestax VCI-300) for the first time (basically an all in one DJ unit… don’t worry, we still use turntables at weddings!), I was able to record what was playing with a touch of a button.  Here’s a 20 minute taste of the smoothness (80s/90s/R&B) I was spinning that night… just in time for SUMMER!

Throwback: DJ Taiga and His Big Fat Chinese Wedding

No Comments Mixes, Real Weddings

When my then girlfriend then fiancée and now wife Monica (you follow?) and I got engaged on a cold wintery afternoon in Niketown (Props to Nike for hooking us up with shoes & an empty Niketown for our engagement shoot!) on 57th & Madison Ave in NYC back in late 2008, there was one decision about the wedding that we had already agreed on:

I was going to DJ my own wedding…*

Well, not in the traditional sense.  The plan was for me to make my own wedding mix and my comrades would handle the equipment and run the show.  So I guess more accurately put, I hired myself and my brethren to DJ my own wedding.

Don’t think it would a good idea?  Why?  I knew my clients’ musical tastes (mine!) better than anyone else, I knew my clients’ guests’ musical tastes (our friends & family!) better than anyone else, and I’m a good DJ (just being honest!).  If that’s not hitting the trifecta, I don’t know what is!

This mix reflects my style (“DANCE YOUR SOCKS OFF”) and musical tastes (Hip Hop/Pop/Rock/Funk/Disco/Reggae/90s/80s/Boy Bands [don't judge me!]/a little of everything).  Sprinkle that with my wife’s requests (Christina Aguriella, Britney, Pink, Kelly Clarkson [see a trend here?]) and my mom’s requests (YMCA and Electric Slide), you have 77 minutes of dance till you drop goodness.

And anytime you can have a back to back mix of Janet Jackson, Bell Bev Devoe, Nelly Furtado, Britney Spears, KC & The Sunshine Band, Flo-rida, Justin Timberlake, Rick Astley, Maroon 5, Jonas Brothers, and Michael Jackson, you gotta do it!

*Couples, don’t try this at home.  DJing your own wedding is normally a terrible idea and I would advise people against it.  If you want a smashing dance party, playing music from an IPOD all night is almost as bad as hiring a DJ that plays music from an IPOD all night.  Not to mention having nobody to guide the reception along, make announcements, and coordinate with other vendors (photographers/videographers/etc) along the way, especially if you don’t have a day of coordinator.

Throwback: DJ Mike & DJ 9-Volt Spinning The 2010 Halloween & Homecoming Celebration At The Hall of Flags (Houston Hall @ University of Pennsylvania)

1 Comment Events, Mixes

Going back to campus (Go Quakers!) is always weird for me. No matter how many times I go back, I go through the same thing. I look around and the buildings look the same for the most part. There are still kids walking around headed to the cafeteria, to class, to the library, etc.

But no matter how little things have changed from the time when I was in school, things are invariably different.  I will not see a familiar face in the crowd. I will not run into a crowd of friends who will drag me to the bar instead of letting me study at the library. And parties? Forget about it. The chances of me seeing my friends’ faces light up when I play “our song” are slim to none.

Unless, of course, we’re DJ’ing the PAACH Anniversary Party and the Taste of Penn Homecoming Celebration.  Mike and I did just that this past Halloween.   It was great to see everyone getting down to the old songs, especially the line dancing. It was also one of the rare times that I got to walk around in public as my true self. That’s right, you heard it here first. DJ 9-Volt is just my cover identity. In reality, I am The Flash. And I’ve been working out. Can you tell?

In any case, all of the reminiscing led me to post this mix. I hope those of you listening can share in my nostalgia.

Peace and lumpia grease.
